stranger’s
gaze.
"I can get that. Here," the man yanked the
vampire book from my hands and shoved it and his San Francisco
travel guide book onto the counter. "If you don't mind, that is?"
He glanced back, flashing me a smile.
A smile I innocently recognized from
‘eyefucking that wiry Earth actor,’ my ex-boyfriend’s phrase not
mine, even though I did approve of the label he gave for my
observing Adam’s many celebrity photos on my dual monitors. (Note:
I said ex-boyfriend.)
Yes, the one and only Adam Tyler was standing
in front of me offering to buy my book. Not on a movie set, not
busy shooting scenes, or learning lines, but wandering around in a
bookstore for a travel guide. Praise be to the gods , I
thought, glancing upwards. My line of sight registered no further
than his chocolate-brown eyes as I mechanically stuffed my iPhone
in my back pocket.
He smiled at me. "Let’s regroup outside and
get these in a moment. Do you have time?"
I nodded, quickly covering my mouth.
“Can you hold these for us?” he asked the
clerk. “We’ll be back.”
"This is embarrassing. Stay here, okay?
Excuse me!" Dashing down the stairs that led to an exit door, I
didn't wait for Adam or turn around to see if he was following
me.
The lock on the steel door did little to
resist me as I mangled it in my hands and gently pushed the door
open instantly feeling the cool night air on my face.
"Freedom," I thought.
"Hey! What's your hurry?"
" Tasty and obedient pursues ," the
voice inside my head piped up.
I whirled around to see Adam standing with
his back against the closed door to the bookstore. He looked like
an angel bathed in the glow of the few street lamps.
Thankfully I had made it across the alley and
was standing mostly in the darkness between the buildings, so I
prayed he couldn't see my fangs like it mattered at this point. I
was safe as long as he kept his distance. And so was he. It
wouldn't do for me to drain a popular actor on an even more popular
television show. It would get back to the powers that be.
"You move very fast, like a vampire. That's
cool. And the fangs. That’s a dead giveaway. What 's your
name?"
As my embarrassment returned, I covered my
face with my hand again, standing frozen as I watched him.
Taking in his appearance, I laced my tongue
around my fangs, letting the tip outline the length of the left,
then the right. They had come forth from their holding cavities in
the roof of my mouth, waiting for a blood feast. In some cosmic
joke, I had been given vampire fangs that were longer than I’d like
to mention at this time. However, I’m sure you’re now curious. Take
your index finger and thumb and hold them about an inch apart.
Casually move your fingers to rest in front of your mouth at about
the point where your eyetooth is on either side of your face. That
gives you an idea of how long they are. So technically my fangs
don’t drop really. They extend or flip out and I even think they
are scary. Adam? He had no idea who he had followed into the
alley.
“I’m not going to be able to do this,” I
muttered as he steadily advanced towards me.
"What are you up to exactly? Do you know who
I am, sweetheart?"
I laughed in my best low and seductive voice,
knowing he was the flirtatious type. This was not my defining
moment as a scary vampire, I instantly realized that.
"It's not at all close to Halloween and
you're wearing fangs. Is that some kind of fetish or are you
practicing for a part? Oh wait. Maybe you're a beautiful, yet weird
fan stalking me? It's bound to happen at least once. Sometime.
Someday. Even tonight would be interesting. I wouldn’t mind you
stalking me, love."
Despite his sassy charm he was hoping to sell
to me, I died laughing.
“Stalking fan, that’s it, Adam. I’m a
stalker. There we go.”
"So you do know who I am!" His white teeth
glistened as he gave me a wide self-assured grin in the dim
lighting. He leaned against the brickwall near me. His cherry
