saved!â Deirdre announced.
âWhere were they?â Nancy asked.
âThatâs the strangest thing,â Juliana said. âThey had fallen behind a filing cabinet in one of the dressing rooms.â She shook her head. âIâm just positive I looked there, but I must not have looked carefully. Iâm certainly glad Nicole dropped her pen and that it rolled behind that particular filing cabinet, or weâd still be searching for them.â
Nadine raised her hand. âWe thought someone stole them!â she said. She turned to Nancy, Bess, and George. âOur River Heights Fashion Models Club even hired the Clue Crew to investigate.â
Juliana looked at her. âOh my goodness, I canât imagine why anyone would do something like that.â
Nancy opened her mouth to speak, but Deirdre said, âWell, those designs are worth afortune, Juliana. We were desperate. We just couldnât sit by and do nothing.â
Mrs. Corwin held up her hand. âWell, Juliana does have something to say that may disappoint several of you,â she said.
âOh no!â Bess whispered. âSomething new every day!â
âI have an agreement with a professional modeling agency in New York City,â Juliana said, âand Felicity reminded me this morning that I canât have more River Heights models than professional models in the show.â She let out a big sigh. âSo I can only use
five
of you.â
Bess looked at George and Nancy. âThat Felicity is a real troublemaker,â she whispered.
Nancy and George nodded.
âWho will they be?â Deirdre said. âWho will they be?â
George raised her hand. âIâll be happy toââ
Bess grabbed Georgeâs hand and pulled it down. âMy cousin thought you were talkingabout running in the New York City Marathon, Juliana,â she said. âShe forgot you were talking about the River Heights Fashion Show and how incredibly important it is to some of us!â
Juliana and Mrs. Corwin gave Bess funny looks.
âWell, weâre going to decide that by secret ballot, Deirdre,â Mrs. Corwin said.
That seemed to satisfy everyone.
After Juliana left to go back to the auditorium, Mrs. Corwin passed out blank pieces of paper. âWrite out five names,â she told the class. âOne of the models has to be a boy.â
Fifteen minutes later the ballots had been turned in and counted.
âHere are the results,â Mrs. Corwin said. âNancy, Bess, George, Deirdre, and Quincy!â She looked up at the class. âIs everyone satisfied?â
âYes,â the class answered. George groaned.
Nancy looked at Nadine. She didnât seem disappointed.
âNo!â Amanda Johnson shouted.
Everyone turned to look at her. Amanda had never before been so negative about everything.
âI am still very upset that my ONITAP designs werenât chosen,â Amanda said. âI think theyâre better than everyone elseâs.â
âIâm sorry, Amanda,â Mrs. Corwin said. âJulianaâs decision was based solely on what she thought would sell the best.â
Nancy looked at Bess and George. âHer designs werenât bad,â she said, âbut where in the world did she get âONITAPâ as a designer label?â
âI still think itâs all really unfair,â Amanda said.
At that moment the classroom door opened, and Nicole said, âWeâre ready for the River Heights models!â
With Nicole in the lead, Nancy, Bess, George, Deirdre, and Quincy headed to the school auditorium.
When they got there, all the other modelsâexcept Felicityâgave the River Heights models brilliant smiles.
Felicity said, âI hate this town!â
Juliana gasped. âFelicity! Thatâs a terrible thing to say!â
Deirdre turned around and whispered to Nancy, Bess, and George, âThose smiles they gave us
