fun.”
It’s that argument again. It’s been about seven years since I last had this fight with a woman. The last time was about my wife staying at home to raise our son. She wanted to get back to work immediately after having him, but I didn’t want to have him in daycare. In hindsight, we should have had the conversation before we started having kids.
“Darlin, this is work for a man.” I say, grabbing a beer from the fridge.
    “Mans work?”
Yeah, it didn’t turn out well back then either.
“Sarah, honey. These are bad men. This guy took over Memphis by force. He killed anybody who tried to get in his way. It may not seem like it, but I do love you and don’t want you to get hurt”
“I’m not the type of girl to sit and home and raise the kids. You should try having to sit in here all day looking at these same walls. The only thing that ever changes is what I pull up on the net.”
As a teen, I would have loved that life. Give me the house to myself and a computer and I’m good for hours, days even. She is right, though. After a few days, even that would get boring.
“Then you have to take this.” I hand her the pistol I grabbed from idiot number two at the hotel. “I don’t expect you to be able to use it, but it may just be enough to get someone to hesitate long enough for me to take down”
She takes the gun, placing it in her pants at the small of her back. “Give me two hours.”

I don’t know who said power naps were a good thing, but if I ever meet them, I am going to kick their ass. Every time I take one, I always end up feeling about thirty times worse when I wake up than I did before laying down. Thankfully, Sara is a coffee aficionado and carries the good shit. Not the weak ass breakfast blend that my wife used to buy. This stuff will actually give you the shakes after a couple of cups, just the stuff I need right about now.
“What did you come up with.” I give her a peck on the cheek. No sense in pushing things too fast yet.
“You are right about Memphis. He did some pretty nasty things there.” She taps the mouse a few times and pulls up his website.
“Wow, that dude is bold. Naming himself King after Memphis. Gotta take over a lot more than one little redneck town to call yourself King.”
“You don’t know much about Memphis, do you?”
I really don’t. I know it was in Tennessee. That’s all I care to know. “He came here to expand his reach.”
“I would have skipped this shit hole and went straight north to Chicago. Taking that large of a city would help his cause.”
“The problem is…” She pulls up another website. “Chicago is firmly in demon hands.”
“Well, they did vote for gun control. It only took the Rising to prove how stupid that was.” Chicago was supposed to be the city that proved gun control works. Our after-fathers didn’t have the same conviction that our forefathers once had. They claimed that the second amendment was only to protect the use of a militia, which we had no need for. Demons trying to take your home, your life, your soul… seems like a pretty good time to need a militia.
“Besides, St. Louis is still a good target. To get across the country by the highway, the fastest route usually passes right through downtown. Then you add control of the water traffic north and south on the Mississippi and you have a winner. It’s amazing that the city wasn’t bigger than what it was.”
“So, let’s just say that you are a king invading another territory. What would you hit first?”
“The first things we had to scramble to get back online after the Rising. The power plants.” No hesitation, that’s why I like her.
She is right, too much still relies on electricity. Sure, it is not as reliable as it was before the Rising, but it’s still hard to think of life without it.
“Nal has plenty of men at the stations. He would’ve told me if someone tried to take one of them,” I say as I down the rest of
