cannibals killed all of Larkâs war wolves.â
Joules opened his palm upright; a silver baton materialized out of thin airâone of his lightning javelins. In a blur, it extended to its full length. âMy bolt once fried that very beast!â
Which was why Cyclopsâs fur was frizzy. âLarkâs familiars are . . . hardy.â I withheld the full truth: her three wolves were undyingâas long as Lark lived.
âItâs protecting you?â Selena looked aghast.
âHe wonât hurt anyone unless Iâm in danger.â
âYouâre allied with Lark now?â Finnâs gaze darted from me toMatthew, as if the Fool shouldâve told them this. âEven after she sold us out?â
Matthew rocked back and forth on the bench.
âLark didnât know us when she made the pact to hand us over to Death,â I explained. âFor all she knew, we couldâve been cannibals like the Hierophantâs followers.â
Finn peered at Cyclops. âBut then she did get to know us,â he said to the wolf.
Hoping Lark was listening through her familiar?
âAnd she still betrayed us. Me. For days, we were down there in the pitch dark because of her, and the water kept rising, about to drown us.â He visibly shook from the memory, and a soft whine came from the wolfâs chest. âWhen I realized sheâd played me, itâlaidâmeâout.â
âIf the Empress is allied with Lark, then sheâs allied with Death,â Joules said. âShe might be here to open the gates for them while we sleep.â
I rubbed my still burning hand. âWe donât have time for this!â
âYou have no idea what we went through over these months.â Selena sank down on her cot, adjusting her arm sling. âAnd it was all to save you from Death!â
Finn tucked his dirty-blond hair behind his ears. âWhile you were getting chummy with our enemies, we took a cruise through hell.â
They made it sound like Iâd waltzed over to the other side without a care. âEnough! You all went through hardships, but so have I.â
Selena cast me a bitch, please look, goading me to say more.
âA cruise through hell is when a cloven-footed monster tells you heâs about to feast on your bonesâand you believe him.â I let that sink in. âLark stayed by my side to fight Ogenâeven as he grew three stories tall! Because of her loyalty to me, she lies in a bed with broken bones.â
Finn winced at that. He wasnât over the girl by a long shot.
âIâd be dead if not for her and those wolves.â When I gestured at Cyclops, he lay down, sphinxlike and regal. The effect was offset by the finger he still wore in his scruff.
âWe heard when Ogen got capped.â Joules used the tail of his coat to polish that lethal spear. Cryptic symbols adorned the already gleaming metal. âDidnât quite believe who did the deed.â
âIt was Death. To save me and Lark.â
Excitement shone in Joulesâs gaze. âHe eliminated one from his own alliance. Heâll be weaker now. Unless you really are Ogenâs replacement?â
I pinched the bridge of my nose, accepting Iâd never get through to these people about Aric. And could I truly vouch for him anyway? âJoules, will you help me rescue Jack?â
âFor all we know, youâll go get cozy with Vincent and Violet, just like you did with Death and Lark. My alliance wonât touch this. We came here to do a job. Job got canceled. We leave tomorrow.â
Though Gabriel and Tess hadnât said a word, I sensed they wanted to help. But Joules was like their all-powerful labor leader.
âIf youâre a mercenary, then what else can I pay you?â I studied his face, trying to gauge my opponent and gain an advantageâlike perceptive Jack often did. âCome on, Joules. Everybody wants
