beasts faced each other, walking in a circle as they looked each other up and down, sizing up their opponent. I quietly tip-toed into the large closet, softly shutting the door, hoping to remain hidden from these two hideous beasts. For the first few seconds, I couldn’t tell if they were friend or foe; all I knew was that I didn’t want to become the victim of these vicious wolves.
Growls roared throughout the large suite. The two animals seemed to be communicating, and I could tell by the tone of their growls that it was all but friendly. I had no idea what was going on. Just an hour ago I was grinding on a hot guy in a Miami club. Now I was watching two wolves size each other up, preparing to fight. What had happened? Was I dreaming? I was too scared to tell and as I cowered in the closet, the only thing I thought about was my chances of getting out alive and unscathed. I would have given anything to escape in that moment. How had my life gone from pure ecstasy to complete torture in an hour’s time? I had to get out of here… but how?
They paced round and round before stopping, each seemingly waiting for the other to make the first move. The smaller wolf started to back away, easing itself toward the door of the hotel room, afraid of a fight with the dark, grey creature that only moments ago I had known as Jack.
But it was all a trap. Another wolf burst out of the bathroom door, blindsiding Jack and tackling him with the full force of his sudden pounce. Jack fell to the ground, his wild wolf body cringing in pain at the cheap-shot attack. The two enemy wolves walked up slowly, taking great pleasure in the thought of finishing him off once and for all.
He was about to go in for the kill when I screamed, “NOOOOOO!”
The wolves were startled, caught off guard as they tried to discern the source of the scream. They paced the room, sniffing the king-size bed and the drawers, trying to figure out who else was watching their movements. With the swipe of his large paw, one of the wolves smashed the closet door open, looking at me hungrily with his glowing yellow orb-like eyes, as if he was ready to kill me on the spot.
As the wolves watched me, salivating over me like some delicious treat, Jack jumped on top of them, knocking them both to the ground with one fluid motion. The wolves were startled. They tried to gain their footing, but it was too late. Jack snatched up the smaller of the two between his large fangs, crushing its neck with one hideous bite. I screamed, scared for my life, shocked by the horrific violence I saw before my eyes.
The second wolf tried to counter, but it was of no avail: Jack dodged his pounce and jumped on top of him, pinning the grey wolf to the ground before snapping at his throat, killing him in a nearly silent, flawless bite. The corpses of the two wolves turned into men, ugly men in dirty, designer suits. Then the two men disappeared, their blood spilled on the floor, but slowly dispersing in the night air.
Still cowering in the closet, I watched as the giant wolf of Jack walked towards me, still wondering whether or not this might be the end of my young life. I followed the contours of the creature’s body as it slowly transformed back into the shape of a man, back into the Jack that I knew. He continued to walk toward me, his hand outstretched, as if beckoning me to join him. But how could I after the scene I had just witnessed?
He came up to me as I sat frozen in the closet, still fearful for my life.
“Natasha, I’m not going to hurt you. Please, let me explain,” he said softly, as if trying to hide the fact that deep down he was a shape-shifter, a vicious beast, half man, half wolf. I didn’t dare say a word, so he continued:
“I know you’re scared. I know you don’t like what you saw. Trust me, I wanted to tell you… I just needed to find the right time. I didn’t mean for you to find out so soon,” he said.
“Soon? So you were just going to keep it from
