things.â
Bess had signed for her purse and its contents, still keeping an eye out for Alex. âStanislaski,â she repeated to herself. âIs that Polish, do you think?â
âHow the hell do I know?â Out of patience, Lori steered her toward the door. âLetâs get out of here. The place is lousy with criminals.â
âI know. Itâs fabulous.â With a laugh, she tucked an arm around Loriâs waist. âI got ideas for the next three years. If we decide to have Elana arrested for Reedâs murderâ¦â
âI donât know about having Reed murdered.â
With a sigh, Bess looked around for a cab. âLori, we both know Jim isnât going to sign another contract. He wants to try the big leagues. Having his character offed is the perfect way to beef up Elanaâs story line.â
âMaybe.â
Bess slyly pulled out her ace. ââOur Lives, Our Lovesâ picked up two points in the ratings last month.â
Lori only grunted.
âWord is Dr. Amanda Jamison is going to have twins.â
âTwins?â Lori shut her eyes. Soap diva Ariel Kirkwood, who played the long-suffering psychiatrist on the competing soap, was daytimeâs most popular star. âIt had to be twins,â Lori muttered. âOkay, Reed dies.â
Bess allowed herself one quick victory smile, then hurried on.
Â
âAnyway, while I was in there, I was picturing the elegant, cool Dr. Elana Warfield Stafford Carstairs in prison. Fabulous, Lori. Itâd be fabulous. I wish youâd seen the cop.â
Theyâd walked to the corner, and there wasnât a cab in sight. âWhat cop?â
âThe one who arrested me. He was incredibly sexy.â
Lori only had the energy to sigh. âLeave it to you to get busted by a sexy cop.â
âReally. All this thick black hair. His eyes were nearly black, too. Very intense. He had all those hollows and planes in his face, and this beautiful mouth. Nice build, too. Sort of rough-and-ready. Like a boxer, maybe.â
âDonât start, Bess.â
âIâm not. I can find a man sexy and attractive without falling in love.â
Lori shot her a look. âSince when?â
âSince the last time. Iâve sworn off, remember?â Her smile perked up when she spotted a cab heading their way. âIâm interested in this Stanislaski for strictly professional reasons.â
âRight.â Resigned, Lori climbed in when the cab swung to the curb.
âI swear.â She lifted her right hand to add impact to the oath. âWe want to get into Stormâs head more, into his background and stuff. So I pick this copâs brain a little.â She gave a cabbie both her address and Loriâs. âAfter Jade gets attacked by the Millbrook Maniac, Storm isnât going to be able to hold back his feelings for her. More has to come out about who and what he is. If we do have Elana arrested for Reedâs murder, thatâs going to complicate his lifeâyou know, family loyalty versus professional ethics. And once he confronts Brockââ
âHey.â At a red light, the cabbie turned, peering at them from under his fading Mets cap. âYou talking about âSecret Sinsâ?â
âYeah.â Bess brightened. âDo you watch it?â
âThe wife tapes it every day. You donât look familiar.â
âWeâre not on it,â Bess explained. âWe write it.â
âGotcha.â Satisfied, he punched the accelerator when the light changed. âLet me tell you what I think about that two-timing Vicki.â
As he proceeded to do just that, Bess leaned forward, debating with him. Lori closed her eyes and tried to catch up on lost sleep.

âM y wife went nuts.â Judd Malloy munched on his cherry Danish while Alex swung in and out of downtown traffic. âSheâs a big fan of that
