the station.
âHeyâwhatâs up?â he rasped.
âW-weâre leaving,â Tina stammered.
The man moved in on her. âNo, youâre not,â he said in a low, cold voice. âYouâre not going anywhere.â

â
I
need money,â he growled at Tina. âWhatever you got.â
Okay, she thought. Okay. He wants money. He can have everything. The whole fifty dollars Dad gave me. Tina fumbled for her purse.
The man jerked his face closer. His hair fell in dirty clumps onto his forehead. His breath smelled of alcohol. His eyes were glassy.
Tina backed against the wall. Her whole body shook.
âMy ⦠my moneyâs in my â¦â Tina stammered.
But she never finished her sentence.
âHeyâleave her alone!â a deep voice ordered. âGet out of here!â
Josh! Tina thought. Finally!
The man let out a startled cry and lurched away.
Tina covered her face with her hands, ordering her body to stop trembling.
âAre you okay?â her rescuer asked.
Thatâs not Joshâs voice, Tina realized.
She raised her eyes to see a stranger with piercing green eyes and dark hair tied in a short ponytail.
âIâm okayânow,â Tina told him. âHolly? Holly?â
Holly stood huddled against the station wall, her arms wrapped around herself. Tina rushed to her side. âYou okay?â
Holly nodded. âHow about you? Did he hurt you?â
âNo. He just scared me to death,â Tina replied. âIâm going to kill Josh for being late.â
Holly turned to the stranger. âThanks for chasing that guy away.â
Tina felt the boy staring at her. His gaze traveled from her face to her legs and then back to her face.
âYou must be Tina,â he said. âIâm Chris Roberts. Joshâs roommate.â
âOh, yeah,â Tina replied. âJosh told me about you.â
Josh had told her that Chris had tons of money. But Josh had never told her how handsome Chris was.
âWhere
is
Josh?â she asked, forcing her eyes away from Chris and around the station. âHow come heâs not here?â
âHe went upstate yesterday on a geology camping trip with our friend Steve,â Chris answered.
âHuh? He went camping?â Tina cried. âBut he knew I was coming!â
âThey were supposed to be back today,â Chris explained. âBut they called this afternoon from a garage. They had car trouble. They have to wait to get the transmission fixed.â
âWhen will they be back?â Holly asked.
âLater tonight.â
âOh,â Tina murmured, disappointed. One whole night knocked off her perfect weekend. But at least now she knew why Josh wasnât here.
âJosh asked me to come get you. Sorry Iâm so late,â Chris apologized.
âDonât be sorry,â Holly said. âIf you ask me, you got here just in time.â She pushed her curly brown hair away from her face and smiled.
âHow did you know it was me?â Tina asked.
âJosh has pictures of you all over our room,â Chris explained, staring at her. âAll the guys notice them.â He grinned playfully.
Tina felt him checking her out again.
âI thought you were coming by yourself,â he said, his smile fading.
âI planned to,â Tina lied. She didnât want a cool guy like Chris to know her parents didnât let her travel alone. âBut Holly wanted to check out the drama department at Patterson. So she came, too.â
âAhem.â Holly coughed theatrically.
âOh, Iâm sorry,â Tina said. âI didnât introduce you. This is Holly Phillips, my cousin.â
âHi,â Chris said without really looking at Holly. âLetâs get going.â Chris picked up Tinaâs suitcase. âMy Jeep is out front.â
Tina followed Chris around the station and over to his car. In a few more
