caught the flicker in Goldilocksâs eye. If you werenât looking for it, you might not have noticed. But there was no missing the abrupt change in the guyâs attitude.
âSo look, whatâs the story here?â he asked, suddenly impatient. âAre we gonna make a deal? You gonna buy a board or what?â
âKnow what Iâd really like to do?â Kai said. âIâd really like to get Big Dave over here to see these things. Heâd know what they were worth.â
âHey, screw Big Dave, okay?â Goldilocks snarled. âYou guys surf. You donât need him to know what a good board looks like. And heâd say the same thing.â
Kai pretended to be confused. âYou know Big Dave?â
âUh ⦠No, never heard of him,â Goldilocks said. âSo whatâs the deal? You want a board or not?â
âDo I want one?â Kai repeated. âSure. But I donât know what theyâre worth, so how do I know what to pay?â
âHow much money do you have?â Goldilocks asked.
âMan, these are nice boards,â Kai said. âIâm sure I donât have enough.â
âHow much?â Goldilocks pressed.
Kai felt himself being backed into a corner. âI donât know.â
âYou donât know how much money you have?â
âWell, I ⦠I didnât really bring any,â Kai said.
Goldilocks turned to Bean. âYouâre the one with the money?â
âForty or fifty bucks,â Bean answered.
âWhat the fuck?â Goldilocks sputtered. âYou guys came here to look at these boards, but you didnât bring enough money to buy one? So whyâd you come?â
Kai shot Bean a look, as if he desperately needed help with an answer.
âHey, donât look at him,â Goldilocks said. âWhatâs going on here? What do you guys want?â
âBoards,â Bean said in a quavering voice.
âFor forty or fifty bucks?â Goldilocks said. âYou knew that wasnât enough.â
âI ⦠I was scared,â Bean said.
Goldilocks frowned. âOf what?â
âThat you were gonna rip us off,â Bean said.
âLike how did we know this wasnât a scam?â Kai asked, following Beanâs lead. âMaybe you were gonna take us all the way out here into the woods and rob us.â
Strangely, this admission helped calm Goldilocks down. âI gotcha. So Iâd bring you out here, take your money and leave you.â He seemed to like the idea that Kai and Bean thought he was a badass dude. âSo now what? We go back to your car, right? Because thatâs where you left the money?â
Kai and Bean glanced at each other. They both shook their heads.
âThe moneyâs not in the car?â Goldilocks asked, confused.
âWhat would have stopped you from taking us back to the car and robbing us there?â Kai asked.
Instead of answering, Goldilocks pulled the shed doors closed and relocked the latch. âOkay, letâs go.â
Once again they were blindfolded. This time the ride was faster and bumpier. Sitting in the back, Kai felt as if he would have beenbounced clear out of the Jeep if he hadnât held on.
It wasnât long before they were back in the parking lot at 88s. By now the sun had turned reddish orange and had dropped close to the horizon. Kai and Bean climbed out of the Jeep. In the deepening light, Kai could see that Bean looked a bit green after the bumpy, blindfolded ride.
âOkay,â Goldilocks said. âSo youâve seen the boards. Next time I hear from you guys, itâs gonna be because youâve got the money, right? Otherwise, donât waste my fricken time.â
The Jeepâs wheels screeched and spun, spitting back loose gravel. Goldilocks took off, leaving a cloud of dust and exhaust.
âYou okay?â Kai asked Bean.
âGreat,â Bean grumbled,
