before dismissing it. Forcing herself to get back to business with a good mental shake, she was once more in control of her emotions.
“Sorry, must be getting warm in here.” She gave a shrug of her shoulders.
He didn’t point out it was the middle of winter and the diner was more like an ice box than anyone would like it to be.
“Do you have something of the girl’s with you?” Falyn asked.
“I do, here.” Alex handed a small leather band to her.
When her hand covered the anklet, she felt a jolt like she always did when she touched something, then a few fuzzy flashes. She was quick to place it in her pocket so it was no longer touching her skin.
“Now, where do we go from here?” Alex asked her.
“I need to go to where the girl was last known to be,” Falyn told him.
“The Oregon Coast so it’ll be a long drive,” Alex said, rubbing his hand through his thick black hair.
“A long drive is fine with me, if you have the time,” Falyn assured him.
Falyn would have gone on the trip even if he’d said the last place was New York, because right now all she wanted to do was be around this handsome stranger.
“My time right now belongs to this case, so I’m ready” he told her with another one of his smiles.
“If you really want to pay me to do your job…” Falyn presumed.
“I can’t finish this job without your skills, Falyn, not without putting the girl at risk.”
His words washed over her, bringing another burn to her cheeks.
Falyn hoped she didn’t look too awestruck. She hesitated for two seconds before asking him to follow her home. She never normally let a client come home with her as she usually tried her best to keep them as far from her personal life as she could. However, she needed to check her email and pack her things before they set off.
“Okay, lead the way,” Tall, Dark and Handsome said as they paid their tab.
Falyn knew she was taking a risk letting him come into her home, she did prided herself on being a great judge of people however. Besides, she hadn’t picked up a bad vibe from him. Lusting after him might be missing with her common sense’s however.
She pushed her lack of judgment out of her mind.
Back home, she sat Alex down on the sofa while she checked her computer. There were two new emails in her inbox. But as she glanced down at them, she felt a rush of fear run down her spine.
“I’m looking for a missing girl. Willing to pay whatever it takes to find her.”
Falyn glanced back at Alex Rave. Biting her bottom lip, she wondered what the hell was going on. This was from a man named Bale, not from a Mr. Rave, but the words stood out: missing girl.
The next email really sent her over the edge as it too was seeking help in finding a missing girl, but it did not say anything else or even give a name.
Falyn felt she should get to the bottom of this puzzle. Were all these inquiries about the same person? Should she tell Alex about it? No, she had no idea if it was the same girl, so instead she replied to both people telling them she was busy with a case but would let them know when she was free. She hit send. Pushing the strange feelings the emails had caused a side for now.
“Shall we take your wheels, Mr. Rave?” Falyn asked, hurrying into her room to pack an overnight bag.
“Yes,” she heard him say. “And since we’re going to be traveling together, shouldn’t we go by first names?”
His question had her belly doing flips.
“Yeah of course… Alex,” she called back.
“Thanks, Falyn.” His voice came from behind her.
Turning, she saw him standing in her doorway with that odd look in his eyes once more. The buzzing of his cell ruined the moment.
He walked out into her living room to take the call while she scurried to the bathroom to pack her toothbrush and some girly goodies.
A short half an hour later they were on the freeway leaving Portland for the Oregon coast. Falyn’s mind was reeling with more than the case; it was reeling
