thought it might take my mind of Will, but it didn’t.
“Why are you buying that?” Kim asked , staring at me with her hand on her hip.
A pink negligee had caught my attention. I’d never bought anything like it before. “I didn’t say I was buying it. I said it was pretty.”
She smirked at me. “Buy it. Maybe it will motivate you to finally go all the way.”
“Shut up.” I rolled my eyes at my friend. My irritation almost made me put the outfit back on the rack, but I walked over to the cash register to purchase the lingerie instead.
“If nothing else, it will probably get use when you get to college.” Her snicker made me uncomfortable. She knew I hated being teased about being a virgin, but that’s why she did it.
“I thought I told you to shut up?”
Kimberly and I were as different as night and day at times, but somehow it worked.
“Sorry. Geez.” When we made our way outside the mall, she lit up a cigarette.
I frowned and walked over to a vending machine to purchase a cherry soda. “Want one?”
She shook her head as she took another drag. “I think my dad has a crush on you.”
The shock made me drop my drink and I had to chase it down the sidewalk as it rolled way. “What are you talking about?”
“He never makes breakfast like that. I honestly didn’t even think he knew how.” My friend was too perceptive and the unrelenting bore of her eyes made me look away.
“Weird.” I didn’t know what else to say so I popped ope n the can without thinking and soda spewed everywhere.
Her laughter echoed across the parking lot. After a few moments , she dropped the cigarette and crushed it underneath her leather boot. “I’m not calling you mom. Just throwing that out there.” She put her arm around my shoulders and we headed toward her car.
I don’t know if she was giving me the go ahead or not. Maybe she didn’t know anything at all, b ut I had the feeling it would not freak her out if I did date her dad. Kimberly lived in the moment and did what she wanted. I planned to adopt the same carefree attitude.
I had picked up a s ci-fi novel at the mall. It’d always been a genre I enjoyed, but after the night with Will and the movie on television…. I had a new found appreciation. Kim was in her own world, texting nonstop across the room from me.
Finally, William walked through the front door. I looked toward him and smiled.
“There’s a car with two boys in it outside.” He said as he sat down his briefcase. I wondered how the meeting with his client went. His job as a lawyer fascinated me. Then again, what didn’t fascinate me about him ?
Kim finally put her phone in her pocket. “We need some money to go to the movies with them, D ad.”
“What?” I had no idea we were going on a double date.
“Don’t worry. He’s hot.” She said to me, extending her hand toward her father.
I threw my hands up in exasperation. I wasn’t interested in any of the boys in the godforsaken town. Only one man.
Mr. Samuels pulled out his wallet and handed her a hundred dollar bill . I figured I might as well go back to calling him that. We’d probably not be on a first name basis anymore after I went on a date with those stupid guys .
“See you later, then.” He said, walking by without looking at me. I could tell he was mad. The fact that he was angry meant he liked me, but it ma de me feel sick to my stomach . Of course , I thought. I’ll pretend I’m sick to my stomach .
I let out a long sigh. “I don’t think I’m up to going out, K. Really. I’m not feeling so good.”
She was going to yell at me and force me to go, I just knew it. I was surprised when she smiled. “Two for me, none for you. If I’m not back by morning, tell my dad I’m sleeping in.”
“Okay. Sorry. Must have been something I ate.” I sa id. I had no doubt that
