bag strapped to the back of Howieâs stroller. Then the Sheltons and Cam walked to Green Stripes Restaurant.
âLook at the line,â Grandpa Shelton said.
âI called. Theyâre expecting us,â Ericâs mother told him. âWe shouldnât have to wait.â
Mrs. Shelton went to the front of the line. She spoke to a woman in a green striped dress. Mrs. Shelton waved to her family and Cam.
Eric told the cat, âYou canât come in with us.â
Meow!
The cat sat on the sidewalk. She watched as Cam and the Sheltons followed the woman in the green striped dress into the restaurant.
âWow!â Cam whispered to Eric. âThis is a fancy place.â
The tables were covered with green striped cloths. The waiters wore green striped bow ties and jackets. The woman in the green striped dress led the Sheltons and Cam past lots of tables and lots of people. She led them down a few steps to the lower level of the restaurant.
âPlease be seated,â she said when they came to a long empty table. âYour waiter will be here soon.â
She brought a high chair for Howie.
âLook at the walls. Look at all the pictures,â Eric whispered. âThis place is like a museum.â
Cam and Eric sat on one side of the table. Grandpa sat next to Cam.
A tall man in a green striped jacket came to the table. He gave everyone a menu.
âMy name is Roger,â the waiter told everyone at the table. âOur brunch specials today are orange-glazed tuna and old country French toast.â
âI donât want old toast,â Diane said. âI want it to be new.â
Roger smiled.
âThe French toast is fresh,â he said. âItâs the recipe thatâs old.â
The children each ordered French toast. Ericâs parents and grandfather ordered the fish.
âItâs not just my surprise for Ben thatâs gone,â Grandpa said while he waited for his meal. âAll the pictures I took are gone, too.â
âI have a camera,â Ericâs mom said. âBen still has his cap and gown. When we get home weâll take new pictures.â
âWe could do that,â Grandpa said sadly, âbut it wonât be the same. I took a picture of Ben getting his diploma. He had such a great big smile.â
âLook at all the people here,â Eric whispered to Cam. âI bet lots of them were at the graduation.â
Cam looked around.
âI think youâre right,â she said.
Eric whispered, âMaybe Harry and his mother are here. Maybe he doesnât even know he took the wrong bag.â
âLetâs look,â Cam said.
Chapter Five
Eric told his mother that he and Cam were going to take a walk through the restaurant.
âDonât bother anyone,â his mother said. âAnd donât get in the way of any of the waiters.â
Cam and Eric looked at the people in the lower level of the restaurant. Several children were sitting at a table in the corner.
âLook,â Eric whispered. âLook at the boy in the blue shirt. He looks like Harry.â
Cam shook her head and whispered, âThatâs not him.â
âAre you sure?â
Cam closed her eyes and said, âClick!â
Cam told Eric, âHarry had on a white shirt, dark blue pants, and black shoes. His hair was combed back.â
Cam opened her eyes. She pointed to the boy in the restaurant and whispered, âThatâs not him.â
Eric said, âYou never clicked for the college guards. You never told them what Harry and his mother look like.â
âExcuse me,â a waiter said. He held a tray of dirty dishes high over his head as he walked past.
Eric said, âLetâs ask Grandpa to call the guards.â
Cam and Eric went back to their table. Roger had brought them a basket of rolls and pats of butter.
âThese rolls are hot,â Diane said. âWatch this.â
She broke
