itâs so ridiculous.â
âNo, it isnât,â Mayrene said. âI know how you feel. You canât turn your back on your responsibilities to your family just to make things easier for you and Jack. You wouldnât be you if you did that.â She patted Wanda Nellâs shoulder.
âThanks,â Wanda Nell said. âBut itâs getting real frustrating, I can tell you.â
âYou donât have to tell me,â Mayrene said, her laugh booming out, startling Wanda Nell. âI know how I get when Iâm in a dry spell, if you know what I mean.â
Wanda Nell couldnât help but grin at that, even though inside she wanted to yell. Her dry spell had pretty much lasted since she divorced Bobby Ray nearly twelve years ago.
âWhat we got to do is figure out a way for you and Jack to spend more time together,â Mayrene said. âYou need more time to yourselves without family hanging around.â
âYeah, but how?â Wanda Nell asked. âWhich job should I give up? And who would be here with the girls? Mostly Juliet, these days, and even though sheâs fifteen, I just donât like her being here by herself.â
âNo, I know,â Mayrene said. âYou know you can always call on me.â
âYeah,â Wanda Nell said, âand I thank you for that, but you have your own life. You canât always be running over here helping me out all the time.â
âItâll work out, somehow,â Mayrene said. âBut I better stop all this jabbering, and let you get some rest. What time do you have to be at the Kountry Kitchen?â
âNot till five,â Wanda Nell said, glancing at the clock. âThat gives me time for about a four-hour nap, and Iâm sure going to need it tonight.â
Mayrene got up from the couch. âWhatâs so special about tonight?â
âOh, weâve got this bachelor party,â Wanda Nell said, frowning in distaste. âThey reserved the back room from seven oâclock until. You know how those things are. Grown men acting like idiots.â
âYeah,â Mayrene said. âYou reckon theyâre going to have one of those big cakes, with some woman hopping out of it?â She had an odd look on her face.
Wanda Nell laughed. âWho knows? Theyâre sure spending a lot of money on this.â
âDixon told me heâs got something to do tonight,â Mayrene said slowly, âsomething that he couldnât take me to, he said. Just some of the guys. He sure didnât tell me it was a bachelor party. I figured theyâd be playing poker or something.â
âThat doesnât mean heâs going to be at this party,â Wanda Nell pointed out.
âYeah,â Mayrene said, her face darkening, âbut what you want to bet thatâs exactly where he will be? Whoâs this party for?â
As Mayrene asked that question, Wanda Nell realized that Mayreneâs new boyfriend probably would be there. âItâs for some guy named Travis Blakeley. Heâs getting married next week, to this girl T.J. knew in high school. Heâs a policeman, too.â
âTravis Blakeley,â Mayrene said, her voice suddenly harsh. âI wouldnât let any child of mine anywhere near him. Whoâd be crazy enough to marry him?â
âWhat on earth are you talking about?â Wanda Nell asked. She didnât know Travis Blakeley from Adam, but Mayrene seemed to. Whatever she knew, it obviously wasnât too good.
âHeâs been married twice already,â Mayrene said, her face set in grim lines. âBoth his wives died within a year or two of getting married in so-called accidents . Would you want one of your girls to marry a man like that?â
Two
Wanda Nell shivered. Something like that happening to one of her daughters didnât bear thinking about.
âNo, I donât know much about him,â she said.
