asked, hearing him, but not really understanding what he meant.
âThis is a celebrity basketball camp,â he said. âDo you know what that means?â
âUmâ¦that a celebrity is going to teach us about basketball?â
He laughed. âYeah, right. Do you really think heâs gonna be showing up today?â
âOf course, he will. Itâs his camp,â Kia said.
âThat doesnât mean heâs going to be here today.Donât you know the way these celebrity camps work?â the kid asked.
âExplain it to us,â Kia said.
âSome famous basketball player lends his name to a camp, and then some assistants like these guysâ¦,â he said, pointing at Mr. Williams and two other men standing beside him. Iâd already noticed one of them. He was popping shots from the three-point lineâI hadnât seen him miss one.
âThese guys do all the work,â he said. âThe big-time celebrity basketball player just shows up for an hour or two to have his picture taken with everybody.â
âThatâs not how itâs going to be,â Kia said.
âDo you see Jerome Williams here right now?â the kid asked.
âNo, butââ
âBut nothing. You just donât know how these camps run.â
âAnd
you
just donât know Jerome Williams,â Kia snapped.
âAnd you do?â the kid demanded.
âWe knowââ
âEverybody on the wall right now!â Mr. Williams called out, cutting her off.
A few of the stragglers startled to a trot and a few continued to slowly saunter over.
âNow!â he yelled, and I almost jumped into the air in response.
Most of the remaining kids started running, but two or three continued slowly until they reached the wall. The mouthy kid was right beside me.
âGood afternoon,â Mr. Williams said. âI would have said good morning but we wasted part of that by moving so slowly. Before we get started I have a few things to say.â
I didnât know who he was, but he certainly seemed to be in charge of things. He was olderâ even older than my father.
âLet me start by introducing you to our coaches.â
So those were the three Coaches? What about Jerome? Was that kid right? Wasnât he going to be here?
âThis is Sergeant Kevin.â
Sergeant? Did that mean he was in the military?
One of the menâthe guy whoâd been popping those shotsâgave a slight bow. âSergeant Kevin has been coaching ball longer than any of youhave been alive. Heâll be leading many of the drills and will instill in you the importance of defensive ballâone of the things thatâs stood out on any team he has ever coached.â He paused. âAnything youâd like to talk to them about right now?â
Sergeant Kevin nodded and stepped forward.
âIâve been impressed with what Iâve seen so far. Unfortunately the impression many of you have left is not a
good
first impression. Many of you looked like you were half asleep as you moseyed across the floor. This is a gymnasium not your bedroom! From now on, you better all remember we donât walk anywhere. We run. Do you understand?â
I shrugged my shoulders andâ
âDo you understand?â he bellowed.
âYes,â a few kids replied.
âI canât hear you!â he yelled.
âYes!â people yelled back.
âYes,
sir
, should be the answer I expect! Now letâs hear it again!â
âYes, sir!â
âLouder!â
âYes, sir!â we all screamed.
He nodded his head. âThatâs betterâ¦much better.â
âThank you, Sergeant Kevin,â the older coach said. âAnd now, Iâd like you to meet another one of our coaches, Sergeant Josh.â
The second man stepped forward. âGood morning, gentlemenâ¦and lady,â he said, gesturing to Kia.
Every eye in the place looked down at
