sure!â Daphne cried.
The werewolf lunged close again, prepared to attack. Just as Shaggy began to wonder how he would taste in werewolf stew, a brilliant light flashed on. Startled, the werewolf recoiled and fled across the tops of trailers.
Just as quickly as theyâd gone on, the lights went off again. âI thought a little light might help,â Velma said, emerging from behind a breaker box.
âThank you,â Marius said gratefully. âI didnât introduce myself properly before. Iâm Marius Brancusi, the owner of this circus. How can I repay you?â
âWhy donât you tell us whatâs going on here?â Velma said.
I inherited this circus from my uncle last year,â Marius Brancusi began, pacing through his office. It was filled with circus posters and memorabilia â and some popcorn for Scooby and Shaggy. âThe Brancusi Circus is world famous. Itâs an international circus, with acts from every country. Iâve been working to modernize it. Iâve been phasing out the animal acts, giving it more of a theatrical flair.â He smiled proudly. âAlso, I cleaned the toilets, which has been a huge improvement.â
Marius pointed to the poster for the current circus show. âAll of this has led to our latest show ⦠Celestia!â
âThis is so fantastic,â Fred gushed. âDid I mention I love the circus?â
âSeveral times, yes,â Marius said.
âBut what about the werewolf?â asked Daphne.
Marius looked sad. âItâs terrible. I thought tonight, while all my employees are having a night on the town, I might find some clues about the beast. Iâm certain the werewolf must be someone whoâs part of the circus.â
âYou mean ⦠in disguise?â Shaggy asked.
âPerhaps itâs not a disguise.â Marius looked even sadder. âIt might be a real werewolf.â
Shaggy gulped. âLike ⦠zoinks!â
âYou see, for the last few months, the creature has plagued us wherever we go. Itâs scared off many of my artists. And in every city we visit, it has stolen jewelry!â
âRewelry?â Scooby asked.
Marius nodded. âJewelry. Itâs very strange. Why would a werewolf want jewels?â
âLike, maybe heâs a lady werewolf?â Shaggy said. The others stared at him like he was crazy.ââCause girls like pretty things?â They all continued to stare at him. âIt was just a thought.â
Velma suddenly looked excited. âI think I remember a case like this in eighteenth century Bavaria! May I use your computer?â
âOf course,â Marius said, nodding.
âYes, here it is ⦠it was in Ingolstadt.â Velma nodded, pointing to the computer screen. âA werewolf known as Hans collected certain gemstones and used them to increase his power. Normally a werewolf only becomes a wolf at the full moon. But with the right combination of jewels, Hans was able to change from man to wolf at any time. He and the werewolves he created terrorized Ingolstadt for decades.â
âWerewolves he created ?â Marius asked.
âYes, anyone who is bitten by a werewolf and lives turns into a werewolf.â Velma said this as though it were perfectly normal. âApparently, the Ingolstadt werewolves claimed hundreds before being driven out by Maximillian the Third.â
âWow,â Daphne said, looking at Scooby and Shaggy. âYou guys are lucky you didnât get bitten.â
Scooby and Shaggy were both thinking the same thing. âYeah, like, we ââ Shaggy gasped, and began to make choking sounds. He clutched at his throat desperately.
âEveryone get back!â Fred cried. âHeâs turning into a werewolf!â
Marius held his garlic up in front of his face again, warning Shaggy to stay back.
Shaggy looked around desperately as he choked. Finally, he punched himself
