think Captain Jack Sparrow is going to be cruising with Jenna.â
But Jenna was too busy trying to figure out the blueberry cobbler cupcake recipe. âThe question is, how much blueberry pie filling do we put in the batter?â she said. âToo much, and you get a mushy cupcake. But too little, and you lose the whole blueberry flavor.â
She looked at the muffin tins filled with cupcake liners. âBatter first, then un poco blueberry filling on top,â she decided.
âWhatâs a poc o ?â Delaney asked, studying her measuring spoons. âIs that like a teaspoon?â
â Un poco . It means âa little,ââ Jenna said. âIn this case, a little more than a teaspoon but a little less than a tablespoon.â
âIâm confuzzled,â Delaney said. âI thought we should never guess ingredient amounts.â
Herbie weighed in. âYes, baking is a science. Precise measurement is key.â
âYouâre both right, but I gotta go with my gut here,â Jenna insisted. âHave I ever steered us wrong?â
The girls looked to Kylie for her decision. âJenna is our official cupcake taster. What she says goes.â
When the cupcakes came out of the oven twenty minutes later, Jenna gently removed one from the tin and placed it on a plate to cool. She peeled the wrapper back and squeezed the warm cake gently with her fingertips. âSpongyânot mushy. So far, so good.â
Then she took a bite.
âWell?â Lexi asked. âDonât leave us in suspense.â
Jenna didnât say a word. She took another bite. Then another, and another.
When she had devoured the entire cupcake, she wiped the blueberry stain off her mouth with a napkin. âItâs not good,â she said slowly.
Kylieâs face fell. A bad recipe meant back to the drawing board. âReally? Not good at all?â
âNo,â Jenna said, sighing. Then she smiled brightly. â Es perfecto ! â
She handed each of the girls a cupcake. âTry it. I think itâs one of the best recipes weâve ever made.â
Delaney, Lexi, Sadie, Herbie, and Kylie each dug in. Like Jenna, they couldnât speakâthey were too busy gobbling up every last crumb.
âYummo,â Sadie finally said. âIs that a Spanish word?â
Jenna chuckled. âNo, but it sums it up perfectly.â
âThe fund-raiser is a week from Saturday,â Kylie said, checking her binder. âWhich means we bake Thursday, decorate Friday, and deliver Saturday afternoon.â
âAnd I set sail the next day,â Jenna pointed out.
âGo ahead, rub it in,â Delaney said, groaning.
Jenna picked up a piping bag and squirted a dollop of pink frosting in the palm of her hand. Then she rubbed it across Delaneyâs nose and cheeks. âYou said to rub it in,â she teased.
Delaney shrugged, wiped the frosting with her finger, and took a lick. â Un poco messy, but still yummo,â she said, laughing.
Kylie and the girls were packing the red, white, and blueberry cupcakes in the back of her dadâs car when her phone suddenly rang.
âIs this Peace, Love, and Cupcakes?â a harried woman asked on the other end.
âYes, it is,â Kylie replied. âBut weâre about to make a delivery. Can we call you back?â
âItâs the delivery that Iâm calling about,â the woman continued. âThe cupcakes for the Mount Vernon Library fund-raiser. This is Ms. Cushman, the head librarian.â
âOh, yes!â Kylie replied. âWeâll have them there soon. Five oâclock sharp, just like we promised.â
âThereâs a little problem,â Ms. Cushman said, hesitating. âIt seems we underestimated how many guests would be coming tomorrow. We need a few more than I originally ordered.â
âNot to worry,â Kylie said. âWe always bake some extras just in
