if the walls of the ship had suddenly dissolved in a rectangular pattern. Yellow light shone out from inside. The door was not large; Adam would have had to stoop to enter the vessel.
âDo you see any aliens?â Adam asked.
âIâm the last person to ask,â Watch said. âIâm half blind.â
âI hope theyâre not disgusting looking,â Sally whispered. âEven E.T. gave me nightmares.â
âYou canât think that way,â Watch said. âThey have probably traveled millions of miles to get here. They have evolved from an entirely separate genetic tree. We will probably look horrible to them.â
âI think I look horrible to my own mother half the time,â Sally muttered.
âShh,â Adam cautioned. âOne of them is coming out.â

A ctually, two of them were exiting the flying saucer. They couldnât have looked more alien. Their skin was vaguely scaly, brown; their heads were huge relative to their tiny bodies. Their faces were V-shaped. Although their mouths and noses were tiny, their eyes were hugeâblack and almond-shaped. Their legs and arms were bony, but they had big hands, and what looked like only four fingers, no thumb. They wore thin tan jumpsuits and black belts that carried exotic tools. In their hands they appeared to carry weapons of somekind. They both looked around as they stepped from their ship. They were very alert.
âWhatâs happening?â Cindy said from below them.
âTheyâre as disgusting as I imagined they would be,â Sally whispered.
âBut they look friendly,â Watch said.
âWatch!â Sally hissed. âTheyâre carrying weapons.â
âProbably only for protection,â Watch said.
âYeah, right,â Sally said. âI bet they shoot first and ask questions later.â
Watch shook his head. âTheyâre obviously from a culture far more advanced than ours. Iâm sure theyâve left mindless violence behind, and I want to talk to them.â
âI donât know,â Adam said quietly. âTheir technology may be advanced, but that doesnât mean theyâre concerned about us. For all we know, they could be here to collect specimens. Watch, youâve talked about that before. It might be better to stay out of sight, and just see what happens. Oh, look, the other shipâs light has gone off. I think I see another door forming.â
The second ship was also opening up. Another two aliens stepped from the saucer. They joinedtheir buddies, who now stood by the water, beside the bicycles. The aliens gestured with their instruments at the bikes. They seemed to be carrying on a conversation but they werenât talking or making any other kind of sound. Adam remarked on that and Watch had an explanation.
âThey probably communicate using telepathy,â Watch said. âExchanging thoughts directly from mind to mind.â
âDo you think they can read our minds from here?â Sally asked, worried.
âWho knows?â Watch said. âI really want to make contact with them.â
âWhy?â Adam asked. âI think itâs too risky.â
Watch shrugged. âI want to go for a ride in one of their spaceships.â He moved away from them. âYou guys stay here.â
Sally grabbed his arm. âWait a second. They can see there are four bikes. Theyâll come looking for us, if they like the looks of you, or even if they donât like your looks. Youâre risking all of us with this idea.â
Watch spoke seriously. âWhy do we live in Spooksville? Itâs not just because our families live here. Itâs because this is a place of adventure. The unknown surrounds us every time we leave ourhomes. I know what Iâm doing is dangerous. All great adventures are.â
Cindy was impressed. âThat was a nice speech, Watch.â
