much so. And God help anyone else who
treats her that way. Those boys would kill them. Let’s get you settled in. Is
here okay, Sam?”
“Perfect. I’ve got the cubby and system all set up for her. Jen,
this is Frank. He’s going to be training you on the operating system. Nick? Come
here, please. Nick is responsible for all monitoring systems. These two will be
your best friends. Gentlemen, Jen is starting her sophomore year at UCSD in
marine bio. She’s been cleared. She also is a very close personal friend of my
brother, so no flirting,” the girl added with a whisper. Frank and Nick nodded.
“Gotcha, Sam. We’ll watch out for her. Miss Carter, we want to
welcome you to the seal unit,” Frank said. “Let me show you around.”
“What part of ‘no flirting’ did he not hear?” Sam asked Nick.
“Your guess is as good as mine. When’s your meeting?”
“I need to leave now. Please help Mike with those reports. I
left him everything on his desk. And take care of my girl, okay? I want her to
learn as much as she can.”
“Yes ma’am. You can count on me.”
“I know I can, thank you. Mike? I’m leaving. I’ll be back by
chow.”
“Have fun.” Michael waved. His mind kept drifting to his morning
with Jen. Anal sex, huh? He smiled to himself.
“…calculations. They’re all wrong.”
“What? I’m sorry, Nick, I was somewhere else,” Michael
answered, coming back to reality.
“I could tell. Is everything okay?”
“It’s more than okay. It’s— what’s that racket?”
“It’s coming from the whale tank.”
“Ton.”
They ran in to see Frank completely soaked and sitting on the
upper deck inside the walled area. Jen was leaning against a corner, laughing. Ton,
on his ramp, snorted and snapped his jaws.
“What’s going on?” Michael asked, slipping on the neuroband. Ton
flashed images at him quickly, causing Michael to shake his head.
“Listen, buddy, I’m not your calf. Slow down. One at a time. Oh…
no. She’s fine. Thank you, but you don’t need to worry. Yes… After feeding. No,
not yet. Huh? I’m not being an elephant seal. Jerk.”
Nick was helping Frank up during the conversation. “What’s
going on, Mike?”
“Apparently, Ton interpreted Frank’s actions towards Jen as
inappropriate. He was protecting her honor. He demanded that Sam come here
immediately to intervene.” Michael chuckled.
“What did I do?” Frank asked.
“You touched her.” Michael smiled.
“I was helping her up the fuckin’ ladder, that’s all.”
“Language. Ton doesn’t care why you touched her. He’s decided
she needs protecting. Hey, he called ME an elephant seal because I wouldn’t let
her dive with him yet.”
“Someone needs to tell that damn whale that he’s only
oversized sardine. Son of a—”
“Frank, cool it. I know you’re pissed. This isn’t the first
time you’ve been soaked by the bastard. Go take a break and get dried off. Be
back after chow. No arguments.”
“Yes, sir. Excuse me, ma’am,” Frank grumbled, storming away. Jen
continued to laugh, accepting Michael’s hand down the ladder.
Chapter 2
“Lt. Quimby? General J on the phone for you,” a voice
announced over the intercom.
“Welcome to my world. Nick, please show her the systems, and
no touching.” Michael picked up the phone line from the tank area, “Hey Scott,
what can I help you with?”
“I just wanted to know how your little detour this morning
faired.”
“It’s none of your business.”
“So nothing?”
“Scott, if every morning was like this one, I’d be up before
dawn without complaining. Now lay off.”
“Why are you being an asshole? What’s going on over there? Did
your sister do something?”
“I’m not being an asshole. I’m trying to run a unit with a
temperamental and overprotective killer whale who soaks my crew when he’s not
happy. He’s decided that Jen belongs to him too. Damn whale.”
“That’s not going to change. Where’s
