shook her head. âNo. Thatâs not it.â She hopped off the bench.
âWhere are you going?â Katie asked her.
âTo find out who he is.â
Katie knew better than to talk to strangers. âThatâs a bad idea,â she said.
Annabelle didnât care. She got up and walked straight toward the mystery man.
Katie couldnât let her do that alone. It was too dangerous. âAnnabelle, wait!â she cried out as she ran after her.
Chapter 5
Annabelle was quick. By the time Katie caught up to her, she was already seated next to the man on the bench.
âDo I know you?â Annabelle asked.
The man pulled his baseball hat farther down his face. âI doubt it,â he said in a thick English accent.
Annabelle stared even harder. âYouâre that guard from Buckingham Palace!â she exclaimed. âThe one I made laugh.â
The man sat up suddenly. He glared at Annabelle. âThat was you ?â
Annabelle nodded proudly. âDonât you remember me?â
The man frowned. âI guess so. Itâs all kind of foggy.â
âWhat was it about me that made you laugh when no one else could?â Annabelle asked him.
âI donât know. I didnât ...â he began.
âYes, you did,â Annabelle told him. âEveryone saw you.â
âDonât remind me,â the man answered her.
âDid you get in trouble?â Katie asked nervously.
âYou canât make mistakes when youâre guarding the Queen,â he answered with a sigh. âIâm on desk duty from now on. No more fancy uniforms. No more marching. Itâs not the way I wanted to go out.â
âGo out?â Katie asked.
âIâm almost finished with my time in the guard,â he explained.
âOh,â Katie said. âSo what are you going to do next?â
âI donât know,â the guard told her. âI donât think anyone would hire me. Iâm a real laughingstock.â
At that moment, Vicki came over. âGirls, you shouldnât just disappear like that,â she scolded them. âI think you know better than to talk to strangers. Come on, girls. Letâs go.â She handed the girls their ice-cream cones.
âHeâs not a stranger,â Annabelle told her. âThis is the guard from the palace. The one I made laugh.â
âOh. I see.â The tour guide held out her hand. âIâm Vicki.â
âTim Becker,â the guard replied.
âHeâs going to leave the guard soon,â Katie told Vicki. âWeâre talking about the jobs he could have.â
âGirls,â Vicki said. âI donât think ...â
But Katie really wanted to help Tim. She had to. âWasnât there something you wanted to do before this all happened?â
Tim thought for a moment. âWell, there was one thing. But ... oh, never mind. Youâll think Iâve gone bonkers.â
âNo, we wonât,â Katie insisted.
âWell,â Tim said slowly, âIâve always wanted to be a stand-up comic. All my mates say Iâm the funniest bloke they know.â
âHave you ever tried doing stand-up comedy?â Vicki asked him.
âNot really,â Tim answered. âAlthough everyoneâs laughing at me now, anyway.â
Katie frowned. She felt just awful about that.
Then, suddenly she got one of her great ideas. âIf everyoneâs laughing anyway, why donât you do an act in a club?â
âItâs not that easy,â Tim told her. âYou canât just walk into a club and say you want to go onstage.â
âActually you can,â Vicki told him. âThereâs a place right near Piccadilly Circus that has amateur night. Anyone can try to be a comic there.â
âBut I donât have an act,â Tim said.
âSure you do,â Katie told him. She was getting excited now. âYou could
