single day?” Her tone told him that was unreasonable by her standards.
Rolling his eyes with a heavy sigh, Maddox’s voice was cold and short. “Yes, that’s typically how a job works.”
She stood, obviously unhappy. “Actually, a job has somewhat reasonable hours, with an end time. Something that never ends, that’s called life. Sorry, but I’m not interested. Good luck on your search, Mr. Maddox.” Grabbing up a green canvas bag, she made her way to the door. “Thank you for the offer.”
Unbelievable. “Wait, Ms. Hargrove.” He waited until she turned around to speak. “You say you want a job, but you don’t want to work or to have a sexual relationship with me. What gives?”
Green eyes rolled into her head and her arms crossed in a defensive gesture. “I didn’t say I didn’t want to work. I just don’t want to work around the clock for . . . well, I just don’t, so thank you. Goodbye.”
Dammit, would he ever win with this woman? “What do you want, then?”
She sighed as that green gaze tore into him, looking through him almost and finding him lacking. “I just need enough money to get home, and I am willing to work, within reason, for that money. I’d like something I can do well and take some pride in while also enjoying the time I have in paradise.”
She wasn’t like the other women he’d encountered on the island. From jet-setters to backpackers women, for the most part, were all the same as far as Maddox was concerned. He flashed his sexy smile, his wealth and they came running, offering all manner of sexual pleasure for a few days with him and a few trinkets or designer clothes. She, however, actually wanted to work, just maybe not as a career assistant.
“Okay,” he started with a nod. “My casino is hosting a televised poker tournament in four weeks, and my last assistant quit on me. I’ll keep looking for a real assistant while you plan this event for me. I’ll give you ten grand, and you can put the expenses on the company credit card. What do you say?”
Plump pink lips spread out and curved into a smile so stunning, Maddox felt something shift inside him. “I say you have yourself a deal, Mr. Maddox.”
His smile dimmed. “It’s just Maddox, no mister.” Walking over to her, Maddox stood too close and extended his hand to her. “Nice to meet you . . . ?”
“Briana,” she filled in and took his hand in hers, giving it a firm shake. “Do you have details for me to get started?”
“No. Come back tomorrow at the same time, and I’ll have everything ready for you.”
“Aye, Captain. See you in the morning then.” Maddox chuckled at the way she saluted him. Pressing her body against his so she could open the door, Briana gasped as her bottom brushed against his erection. “Bye, then!”
Maddox laughed as she quickly ran away from him.
“Briana,” he tested the name on his tongue and found he liked it. Soon I’ll have her on my tongue. He knew she might make him work for it, but Maddox was confident they would get there.
Eventually.
Chapter Four
“I’ve already confirmed all one hundred players, plus the production crew, hosts and all that jazz. Are you sure you’re okay putting them all up in the hotel?”
Briana was three days into her new, self-sufficient life and she felt invigorated. Maddox had given her a binder with all the information she needed to put the tournament together, and she’d run with it.
He hid a smile and nodded. “Of course. This tournament will bring in big bucks, never mind all the big spenders who’ll come out to try and challenge the pros. The cost of the rooms is worth it.”
She nodded. “Good. We need to figure out which room will host the tournament and what else is happening that week. I think we should stick to one room as the herd thins.” Jotting items down on her notepad, Briana hardly spared a glance for Maddox which was perfect. As long as she could avoid looking at him and stay at least six feet away
