followed.
âSure,â Heidi said, her wide eyes questioning. âLet me grab my purse.â
With her friend gone and her son alongside her, Daisywished for courage, but found none. Sheâd always known this day was coming, though that knowledge did little to make it easier.
Clearing her throat, she suggested, âWhy donât we all sit down.â
Kolt didnât budge. âWho are you?â he asked Luke. âWhy are you making my mom cry?â
âSorry about that,â Luke said, âbut she did something that hurt not just me but you. Now, sheâs sad.â
Daisy held Kolt for all she was worth. She had never needed her son more. âSweetheart, remember how I told you your father lives really far away, and how he loves you bunches, but hasnât been able to see you?â
Her son looked from her to scowling Luke. âYeahâ¦â
âW-well, I wish this moment couldâve been more special for you, but sweetie, this manâLuke Montgomeryâis your dad.â
Luke knelt. âHey, bud. I, ah, sure am glad to finally meet you.â
âIf you really are my dad,â Kolt said, âthen how come you never loved me enough to see me before now?â
âItâs complicated.â Daisy molded her hands to Koltâs shoulders, hugging him against her.
âI hate that word.â Kolt broke free of Daisyâs hold. âWhy canât you ever just tell me the truth? I know my dad doesnât love me and thatâs why he never wanted to see me.â
âWhoa!â When Kolt took off running toward his room, Luke snagged him back. âYou wanna know the truth? Until ten minutes ago, I never knew you existed.More truth? Iâm really mad at your mom for not even telling me she was having my baby.â
âReally?â The boy looked from his mother to his father. With each bit of information Koltâs eyes widened and Daisyâs heart broke a little more. What had she done? In hopes of protecting her child from that monster, Henry, sheâd hidden him away from everyone who would have loved him, in the process, hurting him more than she ever couldâve known. âIs that true, Mom?â
Eyes pooling, Daisy nodded. âIâm so sorry. I never meant for you to find out this way. I justâ¦â Her advanced degree didnât help impossible words come easily.
âIf you give me a chance,â Luke said to their son, ânothing would make me happier than getting to know you the way a father should know his son.â
âB-but youâre a stranger.â As if transforming himself into a self-sufficient island, Kolt also wrestled free of his fatherâs hold.
âThatâs my point. Youâre my son. We should at least be friends, donât you think?â
Expression more confused than ever, Kolt escaped to his room, slamming his door behind him.
Daisy chased after him, but Luke grabbed her. âLet him be. Poor kid has a lot to digest. In time, heâll be all right.â
âHow do you know?â Daisy snapped. âLike Kolt said, youâre strangers.â
âAnd whose fault is that?â Luke asked.
The line on its own stung. Knowing Daisy had noone but herself to blame delivered its own special pain. âRegardless, I think you should leave.â
âThe hell I will.â Brushing past her, he parked himself on one of the kitchen-counter bar stools. âGot any beer?â
âIâm serious,â she said in a whisper. âGet out. Kolt needs time to adjust, and I needââ
âI donât care what you need,â Luke said in a dangerous tone. âThis is about my son and me. If youâd wanted the idyllic pregnancy announcement, you might have considered staying in Weed Gulch.â
Exhausted, no doubt feverish, with an equally sick son on her hands, Daisy wanted to fight back, but lacked the strength, not to mention the
