me.â
She gave a relieved sigh and grinned; she was no longer seeing him through soft focus. âIâd prefer to insult you.â
âI thought you were.â
Tess gave a concessionary shrugâhe was actually taking her nastiness pretty well, which made her feel even more guilty than she already did. She knew perfectly well that it was Chloe she wanted to yell atâ¦only she wasnât here and Rafe wasâ¦Just as well he had a broad backâvery broad, as it happened, she mused, her eyes sliding briefly to the impressive muscular solidity of his powerful shoulders. Her empty stomach squirmed uncomfortably.
âWell, Baggins doesnât seem to be holding a grudge,â she admitted. The undiscriminating animalâs juvenile performance was obviously for Rafeâs benefit, not her own. âYou naughty, naughty boy,â she clucked lovingly.
Rafe didnât make the mistake of thinking her affectionate scolding was meant for him. âYou always did have a novel approach to discipline, Tess,â he observed drily.
Tess sniffed. âIâm glad Iâm not a blustering bully,â she retaliated. âI saw you being incredibly horrid to that poor man last night.â
âI thought you didnât have a telly. Not in keeping with your green, eco-friendly, lentil-eating, brown-rice lifestyleâ¦?â
His amused scorn really got under her skin. How dared he look down his autocratic nose at her? It obviously hadnât occurred to him that she might actually miss the odd trip to a concert or the theatre that had once been an important part of her life.
â Gran didnât have a telly, I have a small portable, and just because I grow vegetables I resent the implication Iâve turned into one,â she told him tartly. âBesides, youâve room to talk. At least when I do things itâs out of personal conviction.â Or in this case a desire to cut down on the grocery billâfresh organic vegetables cost the earth to buy!
âMeaning I donâtâ¦?â
âWell, you didnât show much interest in saving the planet before Nicola .â Nicola, the environmental activist, had been one of Rafeâs first serious girlfriends. Along with strong convictions Nicola had possessedâin common with all the girlfriends who had followed herâendless legs, a great body and long, flowing blonde hair. âYou havenât forgotten her, have you?â
Nicola had been a long time ago and in point of fact his recall was a little hazy.
âA man doesnât forget a girl like Nicola.â He gave a lecherous grin just in case sheâd missed the pointâTess hadnât.
âThat girl had boundless enthusiasm.â
Not to mention a D cup had she chosen to wear a bra, Tess recalled cynically. âSome might call it fanaticism.â
She was distracted from her theme when at that moment Bagginsâ tail caught a pile of plates and sent the top one spinning towards the floor. Rafe neatly caught it just before impact.
âThis dogâs a liability,â he grunted.
âInsult me, insult my dog,â she responded, mimicking his earlier retort. âPerhaps,â she fretted anxiously, âI should call the vet just to be absolutely sureâ¦?â She ran an exploratory hand over the dogâs back.
âIf he was a horse heâd be dog meat.â
âNot if he was my horse.â
âYou sentimental old thing, you.â
âThatâs rich coming from someone who has his first childhood pony munching happily away in the lap of luxury.â
âReasonable comfort,â he modified. There was a twinkle in Rafeâs eyes as he acknowledged her pot-shot with a rueful grin. âIf youâre really worried about the mutt, Iâm sure the worthy Andrew would be happy to make a house call.â
Rafe wasnât up to speed with the status of their romance, but it was well known
